Synopsis:
This case is about the Director of University Health Centre of Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM), Dr Wan Zarina Wan Mahmud, sharing the success story of UUM in managing dengue with a group of medical officers from the University Health Centre of Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT) who were eager to learn about ways of managing dengue in order to implement appropriate measures to manage dengue at their university. In her briefing to the medical officers from UMT, Dr Wan Zarina highlighted that managing dengue was a continuous effort and different strategies were adopted by University Health Centre in collaboration with other units in UUM to keep dengue under control. Among the strategies adopted by UUM were (i) disseminating relevant information about the danger of Aedes and dengue through public talks, exhibitions, briefing sessions, email, social media and other channels, (ii) organizing training sessions to provide hands-on exercises on how to keep away from being bitten by Aedes, to search and destroy the potential breeding areas of Aedes and other practices, (iii) performing regular cleanliness activities by conducting fogging, cleaning-up pipes and others, (iv) being attentive for signs of dengue on patients seeking treatment at outpatient clinic, (v) participating in competition related to managing dengue such as Dengue-Free Public University 2018 Competition, and (vi) documenting UUM’s experience of managing dengue as a teaching case for presentation in case study conference and for use in teaching and learning purposes.
